Sometimes it is fun to get out of Bethesda and explore historic sites in the DC area. Mount Vernon, the historic home of our first President, has done a wonderful job of showing countless visitors each year what the property was like when George Washington was in residence. Starting on November 28, you can go to Mount Vernon in the evenings for a candlelight tour. “Mrs. Washington” will be there to greet you as she hosts her visitors for an evening filled with music, candlelight tours, fireside caroling, and hot cider and ginger cookies. There will be dancing and guided tours of the first two floors of the residence, led by personnages from the time of George Washington.
The tour ends in the eighteenth century kitchen, where visitors can see a duplicate of MarthaWashington’s Great Cake, and bring home a recipe for that amazing cake. After the tour you can stroll through the grounds by candlelight, hear more carolling, and meet Aladin, the Christmas camel.
Mount Vernon offers lots of different types of tours. For instance, if you are a Nicholas Cage fan, you might like to take the National Treasure: Book of Secrets tour of Mount Vernon. This popular tour focuses on locations at Mount Vernon that were used in the filming of the movie, like the basement and the cornerstone.
If you ever wondered what George Washington ate, you might like the tour, “Dinner for the Washingtons.” This one hour walking tour focuses on where the food was produced, stored and cooked at Mount Vernon and finishes in the greenhouses with a sampling of food prepared using an 18th century recipe.
