Wegmans Opening at Rockville’s Twinbrook Quarter

Wegmans is going to open a new store near the Twinbrook metro station in Rockville. The Rochester, New York-based grocery company is going to open a grocery store at B.F. Saul’s planned 2.8M SF development, Twinbrook Quarter, near the Twinbrook Metro station in Rockville according to the Washington Business Journal.  The closest Wegmans at present in Montgomery County is in Germantown so this will be a welcome addition to the Rockville landscape and provide competition to the Whole Foods just off the Rockville Pike near White Flint.

B.F. Saul is creating the Twinbrook Quarter as an 18-acre site at 1500-1616 Rockville Pike that currently features a low-rise strip mall with surface parking. Bethesda-based B.F. Saul, working with architecture firm Torti Gallas + Partners, filed an application for the project in August.

The development is slated to include 11 mixed-use buildings with a total of 1,865 multifamily units, 431K SF of office and 473K SF of retail. B.F. Saul is planning an entertainment venue and a 1-acre park in additional to the 11 mixed use buildings.  B.F. Saul’s announcement did not say how many square feet Wegmans would occupy or when it plans to open. The grocer is the first retailer the developer has announced for the project.

Wegmans last year signed on for its first location in the District, taking 80K SF at Roadside Development’s redevelopment of the former Fannie Mae headquarters on Wisconsin Avenue. The grocer in November signed on for 84K SF at StonebridgeCarras’ Hoffman Town Center project in Alexandria. Wegmans is also reportedly planning a location in southern Loudoun County. The grocer is also opening in Capital One’s new McLean campus with an 80K SF store later this year.
