More pets get lost on July 4th than any other day of the year. Frightened by fireworks, explosions and loud noises they run away to safety but can’t find their way home. So keep your beloved pet safe this year by following a few helpful tips.
- Make sure they all have easy to spot identification on them.
- Take a recent photo of them – just in case!
- Keep them away from the grill while you are cooking the holiday feast.
- Keep them away from sparklers.
- Walk them early in the day before the fireworks start.
- If your dog is afraid of the fireworks, leave quiet music on in the house to muffle the sounds outside.
- If you have to leave your dog home during the fireworks, leave him with a frozen stuffed treat for distraction.
- Use a thunder shirt – while not 100 percent perfect, they help! I know from first hand experience how hard the 4th of July is on pets! The fireworks have started early this year in Montgomery County, and my poodle Poirot shakes until they are done! I put him in his thunder shirt and wrap him up tight and give him lots of hugs, but the best thing for him is the 5th of July!
